The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics revealed Thursday the results of the workforce research for the first quarter of 2020, before Egypt took precautionary measures to prevent the Corona virus.
The unemployment rate in that quarter was 7.7% of the total workforce, compared to 8% in the fourth quarter of 2019, a decrease of 0.3%.
However, with the beginning of the government taking precautionary measures to confront the Corona virus, which included a suspension of the study, air traffic and shop closures, the unemployment rate increased to 9.2% due to the pandemic during the period from the end of March to the end of April 2020.
According to estimates, the workforce size reached 29 million compared to 28 million in the previous quarter, with an increase of 0.2%.
While the number of unemployed recorded two million people, or 7.7% of the total workforce, a decrease of 93 thousand unemployed from the fourth quarter of 2019, by 4.0%.
The unemployment rate among males was 4.5%, and 21.9% among females during the first quarter of 2020.
The unemployment rate among males was 4.55% of the total male worker in the current quarter, and the female unemployment rate was 21.9% of the total female worker in the same quarter.
As of Thursday afternoon, the total number of people infected with the Coronavirus in Egypt reached 10,431 cases, including 556 deaths, and 2,486 people recovered.
Globally, the number of people infected with the Coronavirus around the world exceeded 4 million and 471 thousand, of whom about 300 thousand, and more than one million and 679 thousand recovered.
