This came at a press conference held by Maximo Torero Coleen, Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), via a television circle with journalists at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The conference was held on the occasion of launching the International Annual Report on the State of Food Security and Healthy Nutrition in the World.
“According to the data of the report,” the countries of the Asian continent accounted for the largest number of hungry people in the world, as the number reached 381 million people, followed by Africa of 250 million, then Latin America and the Caribbean of 48 million, “said Torero Coleen.
He added: “Estimates in this report indicate that the Corona pandemic may make more than 130 million additional people worldwide suffer from chronic hunger by the end of 2020.”
The report provides evidence that the cost of a healthy diet is much higher than $ 1.90 a day, which is the international poverty line.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, sent a video message on the occasion of the release of the report, warning that “this year’s report sends a signal of a realistic dimension, stating that in most parts of the world hunger is still steadfast and increasing.”
“The Corona pandemic is making things worse. More people may be hungry this year, and we cannot allow that to happen,” he said.
